Brecon Corries 5-2 Penydarren BGC (after extra time)
The Corries booked their place in the quarter finals of the W John Owen Cup with an extra time victory over neighbouring rivals Penydarren BGC at the Rich Field. On a heavy playing surface both teams found the conditions physical tough which undoubtedly made this an exciting spectacle for the large crowd. The Corries were by far the better of the 2 teams with early chances falling to Brian Keddle and Craig Jones, but both squandered their opportunities. However, the in-form Nathan Collacott isnÕt missing his chances of late and he gave the Corries the lead with a well taken goal after 20 minutes. Penydarren levelled things straight after the halftime break to set up an exciting 2nd half, and it was the visitors that dominated much of the half. Against the run of play it was Collacott again who put the Corries ahead but once again Penydarren showed why they sit 2nd in the league by equalising soon after. With both teams showing signs of heavy legs to match the heavy conditions it was inevitable that extra time was looming.
With the tie having to be decided it was imperative that the Corries pushed hard for an early goal in a bid to avoid a dreaded penalty shoot out, and it was Brian Keddle who duly obliged. At 3-2 the Corries smelled blood and finished off Penydarren with 2 goals in the final 10 mins of extra time. The pick of the afternoon’s goals was scored by Gav Perry when he chipped the keeper from all of 45 yards to effectively seal the win. The icing on the cake was the Corries’ 5th goal when Brian Keddle added his 2nd goal to the score sheet.
A tremendous effort by every man in red but a special mention goes to Austin Mellor who was outstanding and thoroughly deserved the Man of the Match accolade.
The Corries will now face Garw S.B.G.C at the Rich Field in the quarter final to be played on Saturday 4th March.
