BRECON AC runners enjoyed success at the Welsh Cross Country Championships in Swansea on Saturday - braving foul conditions as rain and wind lashed in from the Atlantic.

Llandrindod Wells-based Heidi Davies, in particular, showed true grit, as she finished second in the U20 women’s race on a course that became muddier through the afternoon.

The GB international mountain runner finished second over the 5,160-metre course in 19 minutes and 27 seconds only nine seconds behind Menai Track and Field’s Cari Hughes with Cardiff AAC’s Carys Bill a distant third in 20.42.

Winner of the senior men’s race was Swansea Harriers’ Dewi Griffiths who finished more than a minute clear of his nearest rival over the 10,100m course in 33.40. Among those trailing in his wake was Brecon AC veteran Martin Shaw who finished 19th overall and in the process claimed victory in the Masters (over-40s) race in 38.56.

Earlier in the afternoon, young Jack Organ ran impressively to take the Primary Boys title, finishing the 1,520m course in 5.05 more than a minute clear of his nearest rival.

Other Brecon results: U13 Boys - 10 Spencer Davies, 13 Iwan Coyle. U13 Girls - 15 Leonora Ritson-Walton. U15 Boys - 32 Sion Coyle. U15 Girls - Tiegan Ward. Senior women - 39 Becca Jones. U17 men - 10 Brychan Price-Davies. Senior men - 31 - Mike Pfeiffer.
