Watch: Council decides Brecon Welsh stream's fate

Powys council’s cabinet will decide the fate of Brecon High School’s Welsh language stream this afternoon.

The cabinet is meeting today at County Hall, Llandrindod Wells and will consider a recommendation to remove education through Welsh from the school at 2pm.

If the cabinet agrees Welsh medium education would cease at the school at the end of the summer term and Brecon High would become an English medium school from this September.

Welsh medium secondary education would then be centralised at Builth Wells.

Last week the full council voted by 32 votes to eight against removing Welsh language education from Brecon High but it is the independent-controlled cabinet that has the final decision.

Councillor Arwel Jones, the cabinet member for schools, has said there are insufficient numbers learning through Welsh to justify keeping two Welsh streams in south Powys.
