Bowlers get Brecon off to winning start

If Brecon Cricket Club 1st team had imagined the perfect scenario for an ideal start to their debut South East Wales Cricket League Division 1 campaign against Pontypridd 1st team they could hardly have come up with anything more than what transpired at the Brecon Sports Association on Saturday.

Batting first Pontypridd were shot out for 67 by the powerful Brecon seam attack with captain Sam Williams quickly hitting his straps with 4 for 24 and his opening bowling partner Tom Jones contributing an excellent spell of 5 over’s for 6 runs and 1 wicket.

If Ponty thought the worst was over after their early problems it was a mistake of considerable proportions because John Kenchington then proceeded to get the ball to swing and seam taking 2 for 17 and with Richard Lovering decimating their later order with 3 for 19 the innings collapsed.

In reply there was no messing about from Brecon, an approach which as stood their batting line up in such good stead over the last couple of seasons, and the Ponty total was overtaken after just 7 overs! With Matt Williams (28no) and Gregg Webber (30) doing the necessary to ensuring a brilliant start to the season for the 1st team.

The 2nd team unfortunately could not follow the 1st teams lead and went down to a 5 wicket defeat away at Barry Athletic. Batting first they posted 187 for 7 with Gwyn Price (58), Mark Waldeck (23) and Ryan Morgan (16) in the runs. Barry batted well to surpass Brecon’s total with 4 over’s remaining. The wickets for Brecon were taken by John Cooke with two and Steve Kenchington, Ryan Morgan and Derek Osborne getting one each.

Next week the 1st travel to play Chepstow while the 2nd team are home to Cardiff Gym with 12.30 starts.
