Gwernyfed RFC set off on epic sponsored cycle ride

ABOUT 60 cyclists from Gwernyfed RFC are to embark on a sponsored ride covering the length of Wales to cover the cost of buying their pitches from the council.

The riders are hoping to cover a route that links the two most distant rugby clubs that come under the WRU.

Tomorrow (Friday, May 19) they will set off from Holyhead RFC at 6.30pm with the aim of reaching Llanelwedd for their overnight stop. On Saturday the riders will then set out from the Jubilee Hall in Llanelwedd off the final stage of the ride to Llantwit Major before catching a bus back home to Talgarth.

The fundraising drive began last June when players and supporters of the club bought £25 lots, giving them ’ownership’ of their own part of the Tribecca Road site where the club plays and trains.

The money raised from the cycle ride will add to the funds already raised so that the club can buy out the freehold of their ground from Powys council.

When the cyclists return home they will be welcomed with a fun day organised by children connected with the club. The day will involve those taking part covering 50 laps of the pitch in any way they choose.

Rob Stephens, Gwernyfed RFC chairman, said: "After an EGM in mid May last year we aimed in the first 12 months to raise £15k Ð today the figure is already at £19.6k and with this massive biking effort we may double the figure we originally targeted for our first 12 months."
