Hay-on-Wye’s 2019 Citizen of the Year award was presented to Kelvyn Jenkins at a well attended ceremony held in the Parish Hall. An additional special award was made to the volunteers of Hay Dial-A-Ride. The annual award, organised by Hay Town Council, is to recognise any individual who voluntarily gives their time to improve the life and wellbeing of Hay and it’s residents.

Kelvyn was honoured for the work that he has carried out in conjunction with the Royal British Legion in organising a number of commemorative events in and around the town to honour servicemen and women who have given their lives. The event held over a weekend in the summer of 2018 to commemorate the end of WWI was an outstanding success despite Kelvyn himself being in immense pain from a back injury.

Hay Dial-A-Ride a local community transport charity will be celebrating their 25th year of operation later this year and its success would not have possible without the commitment of the volunteers who provide a much needed service.

Councillor Trudy Stedman, Mayor of Hay, said: “Nominations were received for two quite different nominees and although Kelvyn was the choice for Citizen of the Year, it made us, the Town Council, realise that we needed an additional award for groups. I was really pleased that the decision was made to honour both nominees and that in future there will be two awards.”
