As part of the Brecon Arts Festival, local adventure and activity company Good Day Out carried out the second annual Brecon Art Competition which ran over the last two weeks of October. The joint intentions of encouraging local artists to enter, and creating a digital archive of work inspired by Brecon were both very happily fulfilled, and Good Day Out director Julia Blazer said: “We were really pleased with the quality of the work and the diversity of the subject matter, with artists being inspired by Brecon Cathedral, the Canal, Pen y Fan and the Market Arcade greengrocers amongst other great places.”
The winners were, unusually, decided by public vote, with the pictures being shown both on the Good Day Out Facebook page, and also on display at Kitty Keane’s Vintage shop in St Mary’s Street. This year the prize money attracted welcome sponsorship from The Hours Bookshop & Café, and also from Party Party, both being great supportive Brecon businesses which helped Good Day Out to increase the prize money to total £300! The lucky winners this year were Velvet Cole who won £250 for the over 16s category with her lovely painting called “A Break in the Clouds”, and the 16s and under category was won with a very slight margin by Cady Duffield with “Autumn Walk”. Cady gained a couple of votes more than her sister Lily, and has generously agreed to share her £50 prize money.
