Two young boys were rescued after they became stuck on a “very steep loose hill” next to a waterfall in Radnorshire.
Brecon Mountain Rescue Team went to the boys aid after they became stuck while exploring the waterfall in the New Radnor area on Monday, July 26.
After reaching the top, the children were not able to get back down the loose stones on the slope - pictured below - and so the parents called for assistance.
A spokesman for the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team said: “Once they had reached the top, they soon realised they couldn’t get back down the loose scree.
“The parents had rightly called for help to assist the boys back down safely.”
The spokesman said that the first on the scene was a Dyfed-Powys Police officer who had gone up to reassure the boys.
He was then followed by a member of the Welsh Ambulance Service, who is also a Brecon MRT volunteer, who made the boys sit safely on the ledge until help arrived.
When the rescue team arrived, they were greeted by the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue service who informed them of the boys’ whereabouts and the sort of terrain involved in the rescue.
The volunteer rescuers set up a technical system where a few team team member went up the slope so they could safely assist the boys back down with the use of harnesses and helmets.
The Brecon MRT spokesman said: “They were very pleased to be back safely down with their parents where they were checked over by paramedics and found to be fit and well.
“This just left us to get the team members back down safely. The first service were working on other ways of extortion in the event of changing plan.
“A successful joint effort which could have ended a lot different if they hadn’t called for help."
Brecon MRT are asking for help from the public so they can continue helping in times of need when people are stuck in the beacons.
The spokesman added: “The need for mountain rescue has continued during the pandemic, but Covid restrictions have led to the cancellation of all of the team’s outdoor fundraising events, so Brecon Mountain Rescue has suffered a serious loss of income.
"Each call out costs an average of £550; with around 100 callouts per year, the annual running cost of the team is £55,000.00."
