James Evans has spoken about the importance of small businesses and the crucial role they play in our communities.

During a Senedd debate earlier this week, tabled by the Welsh Conservatives, Mr Evans said that small businesses “define the economic and cultural landscape” of Brecon and Radnorshire.

The Brecon and Radnorshire MS went on to talk about the thriving entrepreneurship in his constituency, but highlighted the challenges that small businesses in the region face on a day-to-day basis, including limited access to finance resources and competitors from larger, online companies.

The debate took place ahead of Small Business Saturday, which is celebrated today (December 2) - a grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to 'shop local' and support small businesses in their communities.

Speaking after the debate, Mr Evans said: “It is regrettable that the Welsh Government will not use all available levers to better support small businesses in Wales and safeguard our future.

“Small businesses define the economic and cultural landscape of my constituency of Brecon and Radnorshire.

“I’m pleased that the Welsh Conservatives could mark Small Business Saturday given that last year it is estimated that consumers contributed over £770 million to small businesses. It is vital that we support them especially in the lead up to Christmas, as it is a critical period to sustain them throughout the year.

“I also wanted to highlight the impact of small business extends beyond economic, they are champions of sustainability and community engagement; choosing to shop local is an investment in our community’s future.”
