The campaign to ban trick or treating on the elderly and vulnerable is continuing this month by a care provider based throughout Wales.

Abacare, which has offices in Ystradgynlais, has received a lot of support for the campaign launched in 2014 for more thoughtful trick or treating.

Samhainophobia - a phobia caused by the sheer stress and anxiety caused by the spooky season.

According to Abacare, for a lot of elderly and vulnerable people, it is the thought of what people at the door might do because in the past people have been known to throw eggs and flour, or even start fires and throw fireworks.

Abacare’s Registered Manager Sam Evans said: "While we encourage youngsters to have fun with Halloween, as part of our campaign we also urge them to think about any elderly relatives or neighbours they might have as the celebrations can be especially frightening for them.

"Any elderly people living alone may not want to open their doors to strangers on a cold winter evening. Not opening the door can result in a nasty trick being played, which can be as equally distressing.

Sam said that Abacare want people and their children to be more aware of the elderly and vulnerable this Halloween. He suggested visiting them to check they are warm and doing okay instead of trick or treating them.

Abacare are providing service users with posters to display in their window to deter any potential trick or treaters from knocking on their doors.

The posters are available to download here.
