The family behind a Brecon Beacons campsite said they are “unbelievably grateful” to have been named the best campsite in Wales by the AA for 2021.

Pencelli Castle Caravan and Camping Park discovered it had won the accolade earlier this month when the AA Caravan and Camping Awards were announced in a virtual ceremony.

Celebrating the best camping locations around the UK, Pencelli Castle Caravan and Camping Park in Brecon was named the best in Wales - it is the third time it has won the prestigious title with the last time being in 2006.

The highly coveted caravan and camping awards - which have returned for the first time since 2019 - recognise sites offering guests the most comfortable and welcoming stays in the UK and Pencelli Castle came out on top for Wales.

AA inspectors described the Brecon site as “A charming park offering peace, beautiful scenery and high-quality facilities. Stunning grounds including wild flowers in The Meadow. The attention to detail is superb throughout”.

Run by Gerwyn Rees and his sons, Craig and Morgan, the campsite was founded in 1990 by Gerwyn and his wife Liz who sadly passed away in 2016.

Craig Rees said “To win the AA Award is one of the highest honours that we can receive in our industry. We are incredibly grateful to accept this prestigious accolade”.

The 2021 awards, which aim to recognise the top campsites and caravan destinations in the UK, coincide with the realise of the 54th annual AA Caravan and Camping Guide which will help 2022 holidaymakers discover the best camping and glamping sites by region through the UK.

Posting to its Facebook page after the awards were announced on Wednesday, November10, Pencelli Castle Caravan & Camping Park said: “It is with immense pride and gratitude to announce that have been awarded the AA Campsite of the Year for Wales 2021.

“We take the opportunity to thank our loyal and hard working staff for all they do. We also want to thank all our customers for your amazing support.

“This award will be displayed with tremendous pride and we thank the AA for bestowing the most coveted accolade upon our campsite. This award really does mean so much to us! Thank you.”

Also recognised by the AA in Wales for 2021 is the Riverside Camping site in Caernavon, Gwynedd, which was named the most improved campsite of the year.
