An 11-year-old girl from Brecon has collected over 100 shoeboxes full of goodies for children fleeing Ukraine.

Ebony Slade, whose parents run military store Dixies Corner in Brecon, has collected 111 shoeboxes from local donations which will be sent to the children in need - with plenty more still to come.

The Year Six pupil at Priory CIW School first thought up the idea after seeing images of Ukrainian children on the news who left the country with nothing, and said that she wanted to do something to help.

Ebony came up with the idea of making little boxes filled with items such as colouring books, card games, fidget toys and skipping ropes to give to the children. She has since shown incredible resourcefulness and dedication to put her plan into action - and to great effect.

After creating her own shoebox to get the ball rolling, Ebony put together a video to show others what to do, which was shared on social media.

Ebony then spoke to Cllr Matthew Dorrance about her idea, who came on board to help turn her wish into reality.

So far they have collected 111 shoe boxes, as well as 17 large boxes of first aid kit. The team have received donations from the public, Priory School and the Works store in Brecon, with more boxes set to come this week from Llanfaes School.
