Sennybridge County Primary School welcomed MP for Brecon and Radnorshire Fay Jones to the school last week.
The deputy head boy and girl and head girl met and interviewed Miss Jones on her visit to the school last Friday.
The Cyngor Ysgol (School Council) leads wanted to meet their local MP to discuss what politics is like on a UK level and to ask for some top tips to help support their campaign drive to become the next Cyngor Ysgol leads.
Headteacher Ashley Bennett explained: “The school has a UK Parliament Ambassador teacher who attended a four-day training experience in government and got the opportunity to meet MPs, Lords and Ladies and the former Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow.
“From attending this training, the school is able to bring a stronger awareness of the UK political system and how to develop this within primary education.
“As a primary school in Wales, the school aims to make learners aware of the structure of the Senedd as well as the UK government.
“The school is leading the way with developing a Cyngor Ysgol with the class representatives taking ‘cabinet’ positions with set responsibilities very much like the real government.”
For example, one school representative will become the Minister for Health and Wellbeing which is an initiative for Wales and the new curriculum.
During Miss Jones’ visit, the Cyngor Ysgol leads asked many political questions which were also recorded for a special show to be aired on the school radio station, Sain Senni.
This show can be heard from Friday, July 2 via the school website at https://www.sennybridge.powys.sch.uk/sain-senni-radio-ysgol.
Fay Jones said: “I wish every day could involve a visit to Sennybridge School.
“The pupils were so interesting and posed really smart questions.
“I loved meeting Caitlin, Robin and Eleri who told me all about how much they loved their school.
“They are going to be leaving shortly to go to High School and I know they are going to have a brilliant time, because of the education they’ve received at Sennybridge.
“I really do take my hat off to Mr Bennett and all the teachers for the incredible way they are leading the school.
“I promised to organise a trip to Westminster for Sennybridge pupils so I hope that we’ll be able to set that up for the new school year.
“The school places a great focus on pupil democracy and so it would be brilliant to show them around the Commons chamber.”
