In climber Hazel Findlay’s new show, she’ll walk you through the biggest internal battles she’s faced in her career and how she’s overcome them.
Join in at Theatr Brycheiniog on Tuesday, September 19 where Hazel will take stories from her most difficult ascents and wild expeditions, to talk about the psychological ‘walls within’ that we all face, such as imposter syndrome, fear of failure, distraction, and motivation.
Hazel Findlay has been climbing for 28 of her 34 years and started out trad climbing on the limestone cliffs of Pembrokeshire. In her youth she enjoyed competition climbing – she was the British junior champion six times – but at 16 decided to give it up to focus on climbing rock, especially trad climbing which is her main passion. Hazel has been a full-time climber for the last 10 years, which has allowed her to travel all over the world climbing interesting pieces of rock.
Hazel was the first British woman to climb a trad route at E9, sport climb 8c and free El Capitan in Yosemite, which she has now done four times. She has put up first accents in many countries around the world including big walls in Greenland. Hazel has also red-pointed 9a (5.14d) sport and 14c/8c+/E10/11 trad, loves all types of climbing and is especially interested in the mental challenge that climbing evokes.
This interest in psychology led her to train as a coach so she could help others with their mindset and mental management. Hazel specialises in helping people overcome fears and limitations so they can focus on the task at hand, perform at their best and enjoy climbing more than ever. In an effort to expand her coaching reach, Hazel has started a company called Strong Mind which has two online courses along with other coaching/ training products.
Hazel uses her incredible, insightful, and vast knowledge within Hazel Findlay – The Walls Within to discuss her stories, what she has learned within her time as a professional climber, her advice to others, fear management, growth mindset and the other mental challenges that come with an extreme sport.
Hazel Findlay – The Walls Within takes to Theatr Brycheiniog’s stage on Tuesday, September 19 2023. Starting time is 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm) with drinks and refreshments available at the bar before the performance starts and during the interval.
