A well-known television gardener will compete against other growers at Wales’s top agricultural show - wearing three different hats, writes Bronwen Beavan.
Adam Jones, or Adam yr Ardd, is one of the presenters of the S4C series, Garddio a Mwy, and is no stranger to television having previously appeared on Prynhawn Da and Heno, as well as popular BBC Two programme Gardeners’ World.
He will be kept busy as the honorary director of the horticulture section at the Royal Welsh Show in Llanelwedd, which he revived last year, as well as appearing on a special edition of Garddio a Mwy that will be shown at 8:25pm on Monday, July 28, as he enters several classes in the horticultural section.
He admits to being nervous about his first-ever entries, but viewers can eagerly anticipate the outcome during the programme.
“It's one thing to grow fruit, vegetables and flowers but it's another entirely to grow something that will catch the eye of the judges and win first place,” said Adam.
Adam has signed up for sweet peas and pelargoniums classes along with soft fruits and a display of vegetables. He previously relaunched the horticultural section at the show and oversaw the development of the new horticultural village.
Inspired to take up gardening aged three by his grandfather, Adam wants to encourage biodiversity by working with schools and community groups.
He explained: “I was delighted to be offered this fantastic opportunity to work with the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society and excellent individuals from across Wales to realise the potential of the new horticultural village, encouraging a new generation of exhibitors and growers to compete and celebrate their work.”
The show’s producer, Euros Wyn, hopes to reflect all aspects of horticulture within it.
"We're still in the process of firming up what will be in the programme,” he said.
Filming will begin before the show gets underway during the setup of the horticultural village.
Elsewhere, fundraising has reached overdrive in the feature county of Caernarfon with Show President John Owen discussing the many staged events.
"Funds have been raised in the past by the other counties to support the Show to erect new buildings and improve facilities. We have been raising funds for the show and we have something in mind, but we are not there yet to reveal what this might be,” he teased.
Mr Owen and his wife Marian have shown sheep at the show since 1989, with son Dafydd now preparing to continue the family tradition.
The couple have also been responsible for greeting the Show President at Llanelwedd and taking them around the showground each year since 2012, an honour they will receive themselves this year.
Officials have revealed that Princess Anne will make her seventh visit to the show this year.
The Princess Royal will attend the AGM and the show as President of the Royal Agricultural Society of the Commonwealth, which she last attended three years ago.
