The 2025 Royal Welsh Show officially opened on Monday at the Llanelwedd showground, drawing thousands to Wales’ premier agricultural event.

The four-day celebration of farming, culture, and rural life got off to a vibrant start with an opening ceremony that paid tribute to Welsh agriculture’s vital role in the economy and community.

Mrs Nicola Davies FRAgS, Chair of Council for the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, welcomed attendees, highlighting the Show’s significance beyond farming.

“It underlines its importance, not only economically, but socially and culturally too,” she said.

This year’s Feature County, Caernarfonshire, was given special recognition, with thanks to the fundraising committees and this year’s RWAS President, Mr John R Owen. Mrs Davies also recited a specially commissioned “Cerdd Groeso” (Welcome Sonet) by renowned Welsh poet Myrddin ap Dafydd.

Mr Owen reflected on his family’s long connection to the event dating back to the 1950s.

“I have no doubt that the founders of the Society are looking down in much admiration of today’s standards and achievements,” he remarked.

Broadcaster and author Dei Tomos officially opened the Show, calling it “the main Welsh festival” and praising the sense of friendship the event fosters. He recalled his own early days at the Show in the 1980s and honoured the late Huw Griffith, noting that Griffith’s grandson Rhys now carries on the farming legacy as this year’s RWAS Ambassador.

A highlight of the opening day was a visit from HRH The Princess Royal, President of the Royal Agricultural Society of the Commonwealth. She attended the RASC AGM before taking a tour of the showground, meeting exhibitors and visitors, and seeing the new additions since her last visit in 2022.
