There was a good showing of stock at Knighton Market on Thursday, May 22, with 143 hoggets and 210 cull sheep going under the hammer.

Hoggets averaged 345.36ppk SQQ and 264.67ppk overall, with a tidy entry of mainly tup lambs selling well and above the previous day’s average.

With demand rising ahead of the upcoming festival on June 6, lighter lambs between 34-43kg – particularly tup lambs – are expected to remain in demand. Auctioneers are encouraging vendors to draw lambs at 34kg if they have the cover, as these handier weights are currently making the strongest trade.

The ewe trade held firm, despite a more mixed entry and fewer meated types – typical for the time of year. All breeds and types remained in strong demand, with meated hill ewes and cull rams particularly sought after.

The next sale at Knighton Market will be the Annual Summer Primestock Show & Sale on Thursday, June 5, featuring two classes:

• Best pen of 5 or more lambs, any weight, sired by a native breed

• Best pen of 5 or more lambs, any weight, sired by a continental breed

The Champion Pen will receive the John Isherwood Memorial Trophy.
