McCartneys reported an entry of 622 new season lambs and 289 cull sheep at Knighton Market on Thursday, August 28.

The lambs averaged 304.89ppk and 306.10ppk overall, with trade described as stronger than the previous day and around 5–10ppk up.

Top prices included 319.00ppk for 47kg Texel lambs to £150.00 from E & W Griffiths, and 317.00ppk for 44.5kg Texel lambs to £141.00 from N T Davies. The top price per head came from Messrs Jones at £171.00 for 55.5kg lambs.

Lighter lambs in the 36kg range sold particularly well, outpacing other centres, while the best trade was for lambs 44kg and above with good cover, most of which sold over 308ppk. The overall average was £139.80, up to £171.00.

McCartneys noted that Knighton has seen a consistently stronger trade than many other centres over the past month, supported by demand from both Welsh and English buyers, with the option for sheep to return home if needed.

Cull ewes also met with a much sharper trade than last week, averaging £111.69 with strong demand across the board, particularly for grazing types.

Top prices included £210.00 for a Texel wether from E R Phillips & Co, £170.00 for Mules from G E T Jones, and £133.00 for Welsh ewes from J Bevan & Son. Rams sold to £140.00 for a Texel from A Thomas. Auctioneers encouraged producers to sort and market weaning ewes, with entries required by Wednesday.
