BRECONSHIRE War Memorial Hospital paid host to a group of visitors from Pontypridd marking the NHS’s 70th anniversary.

Members of St David’s Uniting Church and Castle Square United Reform Church are walking around Wales, stopping at NHS hospitals en route to thank the staff for their efforts.

On Friday (July 13) Revd Dr Phil Wall, Bethan Walkling and Stephen Lewis called in at Brecon’s hospital during their 11-day marathon and met ward sisters Emma McGowan and Elaine Scott, handing them gifts of chocolates and a handmade knitted nurse.

The walkers also called in at Knighton Community Hospital last Wednesday (July 11).

The tour finished at the Aneurin Bevan statue in Cardiff on Tuesday (July 17), where the walkers presented thank you letters to members of the assembly. ‘Nye’ Bevan was the chief architect behind the setting up of the NHS in 1948.

Explaining the motivation behind the walk, Revd Dr Wall said: “We think it’s so important to show our appreciation of our NHS and its pride at being founded by Nye Bevan, a local and now international hero.”
