OVER fifty runners took on the Cardiff Half Marathon on Sunday in memory of four-year-old Drew Barker-Wright who lost his battle with a rare chordoma cancer earlier this year.
#TeamDrew, which was organised by Drew’s parents Mel Barker and John Wright from Talgarth, was made up of 54 runners who were hoping to raise money for the charity in Drew’s name.
The groups fastest runner, Andy May, came 270th out of over 19,000 runners. He managed to complete the half marathon in one hour, 25 minutes and 37 seconds.
#TeamDrew also included three cancer survivors; Steve Mandel and Josh Sommer who are both chordoma survivors, and Brian Magos who is a Hodgkins Lymphoma survivor.
Mel and John ran the entire course together and crossed the finish line holding hands.
Mel said: "It really was an achievement - neither of us have ever been runners but we ran the whole way, and we crossed holding hands which is what Drew would have wanted.
""It was a difficult day in general for us, but we did it for Drew. We needed it and it kept us going. It helped with the grieving and getting us out of the house because, quite honestly, there were days where neither of us wanted to even get out of bed."
Mel and John are still gathering up the money everybody raised for The Drew Barker-Wright Charity, however they are hoping to smash their £15,000 target.
The new charity is still being registered, but aims to help families internationally who are affected by chordoma.
