Residents of Brecon’s Gwenllian Morgan Court held their annual coffee morning recently to raise funds for a chosen charity.

This year, they selected Brecon Dial-a-Ride, a vital service relied upon by many, including some of the residents themselves.

Everyone pitched in to support the event, with donations of goods for two well-supported raffles. Helen sold beautifully handmade notelets, and there was a fun “Guess the Name of the Dog” competition - the winning name was Smiley, in case you’re wondering!

The highlight of the day was the impressive cake table, stocked with bakes lovingly made by residents Alison, Maggie, and Joan. The cakes proved hugely popular and raised the most money. With a little help from the Social Club Fund, the event raised a fantastic total of £500.

A few days later, Lisa Marsh, manager of Brecon Dial-a-Ride, visited to collect the cheque. The accompanying photo shows our chairman Alison presenting it to her. Lisa expressed heartfelt thanks for the donation, noting how essential every penny is to the charity. She also praised the care and dedication of the Dial-a-Ride volunteers, especially those who support one of our residents with weekly travel.

Lisa also suggested that trips could be organised specifically for residents, a proposal that was warmly welcomed.

During the morning, resident Helen shared a touching story about her childhood friend Gill, who lived in Lowestoft and was herself disabled. In the 1950s, Gill helped to set up a transport project for disabled people - a forerunner to schemes like Dial-a-Ride. Her efforts left a lasting legacy and were an inspiration to all.
