From Monday 12 September, Hay Castle will be partially closed for a three-week period.
The castle opened to the public for the first time in its 900-year history back in May. It has since welcomed over 40,000 visitors over the summer. In a statement on their website, Hay Castle Trust have said, “As expected after such a huge project, we now have some snagging work that needs to be carried out.”
Substantial remedial work will be carried out at the castle, including repair work on the lift. The Tower, East Mansion, and parts of the West Mansion (First Floor (apart from the customer toilets) and Second Floor) will be closed.
The public will not be able to access the South Lawn as scaffolding will be put in place to fix the guttering. Work will also be done to the gravel path.
The Gift Shop and The Hay Castle Cafe will remain open during the period of closure with access via the Honesty Bookshop steps. This means that full accessibility will not be available. Regarding this situation, Hay Castle Trust have said in their statement, “This is a great disappointment, but unfortunately there is no safe way to keep the south side open while works are being carried out.”
Hay Castle Trust are looking forward to reopening their doors in October and have thanked people for the support they have received, by saying in their statement, “Thank you for your support over the past three months and for bearing with us during the next few weeks.”
