Every Spring purple crocus flower in various places in Brecon and surrounding areas. These have been planted over the years, in October, by members of Brecon Rotary Club to raise awareness of the Purple4 polio campaign, which was set up to eradicate the disease worldwide.

The colour purple is used because that is the colour of the ink used to mark the little finger of children who have received the vaccine.

These crocus flowers can be seen along the Promenade, around the Rotary planters at the main roads leading into Brecon, Bronllys Hospital, Talyllyn and Llangorse.

Crocus (Brecon Rotary)

Last October Brecon Rotary donated large quantities of crocus corms to local communities and schools who have also planted them in their spaces.

Brecon Rotary has for many years joined the wider Rotary campaign Purple4Polio, a campaign designed to stamp out polio worldwide. This has been a long term project in partnership with End Polio Now and since 1985 has seen the number of countries where polio is endemic reduced from 125 to just two, but clearly the goal is to eradicate this disease entirely.

Please enjoy these purple4polio crocus, and if you feel moved to contribute to the campaign you can do so here https://www.rotarygbi.org/donatepolio/
