Dentists may never catch up with the backlog of patients awaiting check-ups, a leading dentist warns.

Dr Russell Gidney said around 6,000 of his patients had not been given a check-up in the past year due to Covid restrictions.

Welsh Conservative and Shadow Mental Health Minister James Evans commented:

“It is vital that the Welsh Government get control of this situation. Here in Brecon and Radnorshire we have struggled with dental provision for years and it simply isn’t being addressed, despite calls from political voices across the chamber for more action. To see that lockdowns have caused further backlogs to our already struggling dental system here in Wales is even more frustrating.

“People across Wales and here in Brecon and Radnorshire deserve the finest dental treatment, yet year after year we are continually being let down and I am significantly concerned about the effect these backlogs will have on the physical and mental health of people.

“I will be raising this topic once again in the Senedd, as soon as possible.”
