OXFAM is calling on local people to write letters of welcome to newly-arrived refugee families.
Oxfam is running a Stand as One campaign, which calls on global leaders to agree on an international response to the refugee crisis as part of its drive to ensure Wales plays its part by resettling a fair share of refugees.
The idea of the letters is to offer a warm welcome to families when they arrive here, making Wales a nation of sanctuary.
Anne Griffiths, manager of Oxfam’s Brecon shop, said: "Writing a letter is a simple but powerful act of friendship. You can write it at home and post it to our shop, write it in store in one of our Nation of Sanctuary post cards or send an email to: [email protected]"
Solomon arrived here from Eritrea nine months ago. he said: "Although I have found people in Wales to be very friendly it would have been nice to have had a letter of welcome when I first arrived. I think it’s a great idea."
Alemayehu, from Ethiopia, came to Wales two years ago with his family. He said: "It would have been nice for my children to see messages from local children saying ’hello’ and that we are welcome and coming to a safe and friendly place."
Solomon and Alemayehu are now giving something back t the local community by volunteering in the Oxfam shop in Castle Street, Swansea.
