THE Llandrindod Wells town Wi-Fi system doesn’t just provide Wi-Fi and collect information about visitor numbers.

Each Wi-Fi box also has a clever little gadget called an i-beacon which uses short-range Bluetooth to send messages to mobile devices to attract the attention of passers-by. A free app called Splash Push (available for apple and android) has now been set up so shoppers can receive the i-beacon messages.

Jude Boutle, from Llandrindod Wellness, who is behind the idea, said: “In time we’d like to raise funds to develop our own app for the Wellness Heart of Wales area – Llandrindod Wells, Builth Wells, Llanwrtwyd Wells, Llangammarch Wells, Rhayader + the Elan Valley.

“What will the messages say? Anything to help get more folk into local shops and businesses.

“Messages need to be simple, eyecatching and tell the recipient what to do, click a link, like a page or go into a shop.

For example in Middleton Street the i-beacon could tell people about an offer in JEM footware available only to those with the app; or a message could give the opening times of the Pavilion box office or advertise a paint promotional event at the Marches on the Ddole Road. So i-beacon messages can reach parts of town where there is no public Wi-Fi or i-beacons.
