NPTC Group of Colleges has defended its decision to remove the ivy ecosystem from the old Brecon Library despite backlash from locals and the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority.
The group has claimed that the renovation of the building cannot be completed without the removal of the ivy - but they will still follow their ecologists’ guidelines.
This comes as senior ecologist, Dr Paul Sinnadurai criticised the plans to remove the ecosystem.
Catherine Lewis, acting CEO and principal of NPTC Group of Colleges said: “NPTC Group of Colleges has invested heavily in the transformation of Brecon town centre to deliver first-class education and skills provision to the town and surrounding area.
“The buildings require substantial renovation, but the work cannot be undertaken without the removal of the ivy.
“The work is being done by hand, at a suitable time between breeding cycles, and is supported by appropriate licences; advice from the ecologists, and following all guidance and best practice.”
It is also claimed that NPCT Group of Colleges will be aiming to support the local wildlife as best they can despite the removal of the ecosystem - as they intend to put in place bat and bird boxes to act as a habitat for the wildlife in the area.
“Bat and bird boxes, with planning permission, will be put in place to support local wildlife habitat and the dogwood tree will remain for any displaced insects to utilise,” said Mrs Lewis.
