TOMORROW, Friday, April 13, sees the launch of a thought-provoking art exhibition entitled Vulgar Earth in The Andrew Lamont Gallery at Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon.

The exhibition stems from concern that the effects of humankind, driven by profit, are felt everywhere from the city to the landscape of the Beacons.

Vulgar Earth, an artists’ collective, uses painting, sculpture, installation, film, performance and writing to reawaken realisations and encourage discussion of the direction humanity has taken.

The exhibition launch will begin at 6pm outside the theatre with a live performance from Jo Bushell, a performance artist, who will open the exhibition with a participative, site-specific performance piece, drawing on the mythology and landscape of the Brecon Beacons.

This is a free event and the theatre invites anyone to come along to watch this opening piece before heading up to The Andrew Lamont Gallery on the second floor to see the rest of the exhibition.

Other artists participating in the exhibition are Jackie Yeomans, Simon Meiklejohn, Glenn Morris, Maisie Noble, Kim Colebrook, Rob McCarthy, Peter Horrocks, David England, Zoe Young, Jim Carter, Verity Howard, Tina Walton and Glynn Brimacombe.

Punch Maughan, visual arts coordinator at the theatre, said: “I am very excited to be bringing this exhibition to Brecon having first seen the group exhibiting last year at The Canwood Gallery near Hereford.

“The exhibition is part of the theatre’s commitment to showcase a diverse range of work from local, national and international artists with exhibitions that are selected for their excellence, their contemporary qualities and past credentials.”
