EMERGENCY services were called after a lorry carrying potatoes crashed into a wall in Llanelwedd this morning spilling its load.
Police, fire crews and an ambulance were all called to Builth Road, in Llanelwedd, just after 7am.
No one has been reported injured but the accident, which occurred on the main A483 road between Builth Wells and Llandrindod Wells, caused the route to be closed. Traffic was said by an eyewitness to have been backing up after police had set up diversions.
The lorry toppled over on to its side after hitting a wall at the bottom of the hill where there is a sharp right-hand turn for traffic heading into Builth Wells near the showground.
The impact caused part of the wall to collapse and a big gap was visible once the lorry was removed by a recovery crew.
Damage was also caused to a lamppost in the incident and representatives from Western Power had to be summoned to deal with exposed electricity wires.Although the lorry has now been moved potatoes are still scattered over the road and down an embankment.
One driver commented: "The road is completely chocka. It's backed up in both directions and there's a huge hole in the wall. We had to turn around and go around Builth to get to Llandrindod Wells."The lorry belongs to cargo and freight firm B.A.Morgan Ltd from Knighton.A spokesman for the company said that they did not have any details about the accident but they did know that the driver was unhurt
While police originally thought the road would re-open before 11am, it was still closed at 12.30pm and is not expected to reopen for a few more hours while Western Power deal with the exposed cables.
