The People and Places National Lottery Community Fund project ‘Talybont in Action’ certainly lived up to its name on Bank Holiday Sunday, May 5. The Talybont-on-Usk community gathered together for the grand opening of two MUGA’s (multi-use games areas). With the sun shining, the launch saw children and adults trying out the new facilities with drop-in sports sessions of football, basketball, hockey and tennis. There was even an impromptu hockey match of parents versus children - which the kids obviously won!

For many years, the Talybont tennis club had been fund-raising to try and reinstate the old courts on the village playing field but, with the courts about to be closed, a Community Council led bid to convert the area to modern multi-use courts was successful. Using Wales sportsground specialists Folly Contractors, work started in January and successfully finished on-time for the opening last weekend.

Glyn Thomas, Talybont Community Council commented that: “it’s down to the dedication of our local community and support of the National Lottery that this project is now up and running. The MUGA will definitely encourage us all to get outside more and have fun getting fitter. We aim to continue to support this facility as open access for all local residents of our Talybont-on-Usk community area. It’s early days, but other interested groups may be able to use the courts by arrangement - email us for more information.”
