A boyfriend was killed when he punched the window of a club where his girlfriend was a barmaid, an inquest heard today.

Shane James, 28, flew into a drunken rage after going back to the club where girlfriend Leanne Maynard worked behind the bar.

But an inquest heard he became "aggressive and angry" - and severed an artery in his arm when he hit the window in rage.

Shane bled to death before doctors could save his life.

His dad Rowland James was in the bar when he saw Shane lash out at the window of Penrhos Social Club in Ystradgynlais.

Mr James said: "I recall him reaching back with his fist and then he punched through the window."

The inquest heard there was a "massive bang" as Shane smashed his right arm through the glass in the window of the club where he lived in an upstairs flat.

Mr James said: "I remember his fist sticking out through the other side and a huge amount of blood."

The inquest heard Shane pulled his arm back through the glass before running down the road.

Passer-by John Evans had been walking home from the social club when he spotted Shane lying on the pavement covered in blood.

He said: "There was so much blood it had soaked through my trainers and into my socks."

Emergency services rushed to the scene and found a large pool of blood underneath a car.

They performed CPR on Shane before he was rushed to Morriston Hospital in Swansea.

But sadly he was pronounced dead in the early hours of the next morning on December 22.

The inquest in Pontypridd, South Wales, heard Shane had punched through the window on a previous occasion and suffered anxiety and depression.

The inquest heard Shane severed an artery in his right elbow.

Pathologist Dr Jason Shannon gave a medical cause of death as hypovolema shock due to blood loss and transection of the right brachial artery.

Toxicology reports showed a small amount of cocaine in his blood at 0.05mg. He had 175mg of alcohol in his blood. The legal limit for driving is 80mg.

Assistant coroner Rachel Knight recorded a conclusion of misadventure.

She said: "In anger he punched out a double glazed window.

"He accidentally severed a brachial artery in his arm and the bleeding could not be contained."
