Sioned proudly serves her community in two roles – as an On-Call Firefighter at Tumble Fire Station and in a Wholetime role at Pontardawe Fire Station.
In a new video, she shares what inspired her to join the Fire and Rescue Service, the lessons she’s learned along the way, and why becoming a firefighter has been one of the most rewarding decisions of her life.
“No matter where you are, at work or in your personal life, you’ll have friends for life, friends to the end,” she said.
On-Call Firefighters play a key role across Mid and West Wales, responding to fires, road traffic collisions, chemical emergencies, animal rescues, flooding, and more. They also help keep the community safe through education and Safe and Well visits in people’s homes.
Currently, 75 per cent of MAWWFRS fire stations are crewed entirely by On-Call Firefighters – making the role essential to the service. And now, a new On-Call banding system offers even greater flexibility, better pay, and opportunities for personal development.
The updated system includes five availability bands, replacing the previous two, so firefighters can balance their service with work and personal commitments:
- Band 5: At least 120 hours of availability per week
- Band 4: from 91 hours per week and up to and including 119 hours
- Band 3: from 61 hours per week and up to and including 90 hours per week
- Band 2: 31 hours per week and up to and including 60 hours per week
- Band 1: Up to and including 30 hours per week
If you’re inspired by Sioned’s story and want to make a real difference in your community, MAWWFRS is currently recruiting On-Call Firefighters.
