A mountain rescue team and Dyfed-Powys Police have hailed an innovative location technology as a crucial tool in a recent rescue of two men who got lost while walking in the Brecon Beacons.
Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team responded to a call-out shortly after 5pm on Tuesday afternoon (December 13) of two people lost in the mountains.
Thanks to the help of geocode system what3words which was used by the walkers, the team was able to able to pinpoint their exact location on a mountainside above the Neuadd Valley.
The two men, who were cold but unharmed, were then speedily located and brought back down the mountain to safety.
A spokesperson for Central Beacons Mountain RescueTeam said: "Our Incident Coordinator was able to utilise the what3words location from the calling person and identified their position as the mountainside above the Neuadd Valley in the Brecon Beacons National Park.
"We responded to the Neuadd Valley and the first team onto the hill made rapid progress up onto the high ground, which was covered in snow and ice, speedily locating the two gentlemen who were very cold yet uninjured.
"After full assessment by our Casualty Care Medic, both walkers were able to be walked off the mountain with support from team members."
Once off the mountain, the two rescued men were given a warm drink and arrangements were made for them to return to their accommodation.
Dividing the globe into 57 trillion 3m x 3m squares, what3words has given each square a unique combination of three words - a what3words address.
For example, ///gather.cherished.bedding takes you to the viewpoint of Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons.
The what3words technology is used by over 85 per cent of emergency services.
The latest data in a voluntary survey of police, fire and ambulance services, found that over half (56 per cent) of emergency services receive daily calls from people who don’t know exactly where they are or struggle to describe the location of an incident.
The survey also found that 78 per cent of UK emergency services surveyed agree with the statement “what3words saves us time”, with almost 25 per cent saying that what3words saves over 10 minutes per call.
The what3words app can be downloaded for free on IOS and Android devices, or can be used via the online map.
