Brecon and Radnorshire MP Fay Jones has announced she will not be attending Wales’ Six Nations match tomorrow over coronavirus fears.
The rugby game with Scotland in Cardiff is one of the only major sporting fixtures in Britain still set to go ahead amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Yesterday, Welsh health minister Vaughn Gething said advice cancelling events would not make a difference in saving lives after Plaid Cymru had called for the game to be postponed or cancelled.
Both Plaid Cymru and the Welsh Liberal Democrats have cancelled their upcoming Spring conferences.
Keen rugby fan Ms Jones, who was elected as the Conservative MP for Brecon and Radnorshire in December announced on her Twitter account she will no longer be attending the fixture at the giant 72,000 capacity Principality Stadium.
She said “It’s just not clever” and cited the fact that the English Premier League which late on Thursday announced most of its football fixtures would be going ahead this weekend had now suspended play.
Ms Jones told her more than 4,000 followers on Twitter: “I was super excited about going to #WALvSCO but I won’t be going. The Premier League is suspended and no other 6 Nations fixtures are going ahead. No one loves the rugby more than me but it’s just not clever”.The Six Nations match has since been postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak.A Welsh Rugby Union statement read: "Whilst medical advice remains consistent, we have decided that it is in the best interests of supporters, players and staff to fall in line with recent measures taken across the UK and global sports industries."The WRU would like to thank all parties for their counsel on the subject and will make further announcements with respect to rescheduling the fixture in the coming days."Every effort has been made to stage this game and we appreciate that individuals will have been inconvenienced."Given the fluid and unprecedented nature of this issue a postponement became the only viable option."Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats and former MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, Jane Dodds, has called it the "right decision".Ms Dodds said, in a Twitter post, in response to the postponement: "The right call - it would be irresponsible to go ahead with the match given the current rate of infection. Stay safe everyone!"
