Cefin Campbell, Plaid Cymru MS for Mid and West Wales recently met with representatives from Rhayader and District Community Support - locally known as “The Arches”.

During his visit, Mr Campbell learnt about the charity’s work in supporting the local community.

The Arches was founded in 1985 and has grown from strength to strength over the decades, providing an array of support and vital services to thousands of local people in the Rhayader district.

Located on West Street, Rhayader, the organisation offers a wide range of services – including a Community Transport programme, Rhayader Community Nursery, a Foodbank, a Charity Shop, Third Party Support Agency Referrals and a range of Wellbeing Projects – which look to support isolated members of the local community.

The group’s vital work within the community was recognised earlier this month as part of the Powys Business Awards - winning the award for Social Enterprise/Charity of the year.

On his visit to the organisation, Mr Campbell also heard of the growing demand The Arches is facing in light of the ongoing cost of living crisis, and additional strain this is placing on local residents. In particular, reference was made to the Arches’ self-referral foodbank scheme and advice and wellbeing surgeries, which have seen demand increase over recent months considering current financial pressures and uncertainty.

Speaking following his visit, Mr Campbell MS said: “I was delighted to meet with The Arches’ dedicated staff and volunteers and learn more about the array services they provide, which are such a lifeline for so many residents in the Rhayader district.

"Whilst the area’s tranquillity and beauty cannot be understated, the sad truth is that rural poverty and social isolation often hide in plain sight - and the work The Arches are doing to support those facing such strains and hardship at this uncertain time is truly invaluable.”

Laurence Gellor, The Arches Chief Executive Officer added: “It was a pleasure to welcome Cefin Campbell to The Arches and provide greater insight on the work and services we provide to support the local community.

"Our doors are always open to support those in the Rhayader district facing uncertainty or worry, and I would encourage anyone in need to get in touch with us.”
