THE section of the A470 where last weekend's horror crash that claimed four lives occurred wasn't included in a speed limit review.
The Welsh Government said it announced a major programme to improve safety on Welsh trunk roads in January but the area where the Friday, March 6 crash occurred wasn't one of 280 key locations identified for new investment.
At the Senedd this week Brecon and Radnorshire AM Kirsty Williams said the Welsh Government review of speed limits on trunk roads had identified work to the stretch of the road as a medium term priority, to be completed over three to four years.
The Welsh Liberal Democrat leader said the section of the A470 from Garwnant, north of Merthyr Tydfil, to Libanus, south of Brecon, was identified as in need of action.
She also asked, if an investigation into the crash found improvements to structure of the road or a reduced speed limit was necessary would the government consider bringing work forward.
Welsh Government business minister Jane Hutt told Ms Williams: "A serious incident on our roads is always a great cause of concern, and we will be seeking further information when the police have concluded their investigations.
"We can't comment, of course, today on the causes of the collision, but we will keep members informed."
The crash occurred on the Libanus side of the Storey Arms outdoor centre at the Blaenglyn lay-by in a series of bends, which include the RAC bends.
A Welsh Government spokeswoman later confirmed the review had identified a stretch of the A470, further south than where the collision occurred, as suitable for a reduced speed limit.
The spokeswoman said: "The stretch of road where the crash occurred at the weekend is not included in the recent Wales wide review of safety on our trunk roads.
"The review identified a one mile section of the A470 in the hamlet of Nant Ddu (approximately four miles from the site of the crash) for a speed limit reduction from 60mph to 50mph."
Teenagers Rhodri Miller, girlfriend Alesha O'Connor and their friend Corey Price, all aged 17, and from Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan died in the collision. Two other teenagers travelling in the green Volkswagen Golf were injured in the 10.15pm crash.
Pensioner Margaret Elizabeth Challis (nee Webber), who was 66 and from Merthyr Tydfil, also died. She had been the passenger in a black Volkswagen Golf. Its driver was also injured.
Dyfed Powys Police, who have arrested seven teenage boys all aged 17 and 18 and from the Vale of Glamorgan, are still investigating.
The teenagers, who are believed to have been travelling in a convoy, were arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and have been released on bail.
