Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians using the A40 through Crickhowell face significant overnight disruption this spring as the Welsh Government prepares for major works on one of Powys’ key trunk roads. The Welsh Government has confirmed its plans to impose temporary prohibitions on all traffic—motorised, non‑motorised, pedestrians and even livestock—while essential works are carried out on a stretch of the A40 between Standard Street and the access road to the Manor Hotel, Gwernvale.
The prohibitions form part of a Traffic Regulation Order due to come into force on February 23, 2026, with restrictions expected to operate nightly from 7pm to 7am until May 15. 2026. Emergency service vehicles and vehicles directly involved in the works will be exempt, but all other road users will be turned away at closure points.
The works require a full closure because of their location within a narrow, constrained section of the trunk road, where maintaining safe through‑passage is not possible while crews operate. Welsh Government officers say the measures are essential to protect both workers and the public using the route.
A major diversion route will be put in place for motorists. Eastbound traffic will be directed west along the A40 to Brecon, then onto the A470 southbound to Merthyr Tydfil, before joining the A465 towards Abergavenny and re‑joining the A40 on the far side of the closure. Westbound drivers will follow the same route in reverse. Officials warn that journey times may be significantly longer during closure hours.
For non‑vehicular traffic—cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders—the message is clear: arrive at closure points and wait. Escorting and direction through the closed section will be provided when it is safe to do so, but delays should be expected.
Although the works are scheduled to last until mid‑May, the legal order will remain valid for up to 18 months as a contingency. This allows for rescheduled works or unexpected additional repairs without requiring a fresh traffic order. Any changes to dates or times will be advertised at the roadside before they take effect.
The Welsh Government encourages drivers to check for updates before travelling and to allow extra time for evening and early‑morning journeys through the Crickhowell area. More information will be released as the start date approaches.
