LOCAL politicians have spoken of their shock at the death of Conservative MP Sir David Amess, who died after being stabbed multiple times as he met with constituents earlier today.

Cllr Jackie Charlton, Chair of the Brecon & Radnorshire Liberal Democrats Constituency Executive, and Cllr James Gibson-Watt, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats on Powys County Council, expressed their sadness and shock at the death of the politician.

“We join everyone in the Liberal Democrats and across British politics in expressing our sadness and shock at the horrific death of Sir David Amess MP.

“He was a consummate constituency MP and a successful and compassionate advocate for the people and communities of Southend West.

“David Amess also did incredible work campaigning on a vast range of causes over many decades in public service. He brought forward several pieces of significant legislation on issues such as animal welfare and fuel poverty, including the Protection Against Cruel Tethering Act (1988) and Warm Homes and Energy Conservation Act (2000).

“His murder is a despicable act of violence and a tragedy that should never happen.

“It is essential for the future of our democracy that elected representatives and public servants can express their views and do their work in safety and without fear.

“Our condolences and prayers go out to the Amess family, his friends, and staff and all those grieving his loss. We are also thinking of his constituents, the community at Belfairs Methodist Church, the Conservative Party, and anybody who has been impacted by today’s events,” they said.

Jane Dodds, Member of the Senedd for Mid and West Wales and Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, also commented:

“This is a shameful act of violence that no public servant should face. My thoughts and prayers are with David’s family, friends and colleagues at this horrendous time.

“The Welsh Liberal Democrats will suspend all campaigning activities this weekend as a mark of respect following the murder of Sir David Amess MP.

Sir David was killed offering help to constituents. It is the most important job we do and should be allowed to continue in safety.”

Tributes have also been paid in the Senedd, where Llywydd, Elin Jones MS said. “I’m deeply shocked and saddened by the death of Sir David Amess.

"Our democratic process depends on our elected members being able to listen and talk to the public we serve. It should go without saying that every elected member should be able to carry out this work safely and without fear.

“As Members we may have different views, but we are always united in our respect for the democratic process and our commitment to serving the public. My thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.”

Speaking on behalf of the Welsh Conservatives,Paul Davies MS said: “We are horrified by the death of Sir David Amess.

“Sir David was a much-respected and well-liked MP who cared deeply about serving his constituents, something he had done with distinction for nearly four decades.

“One of the longest-serving Members of Parliament, his contribution to public life was vast and he will be sorely missed by those in Southend and in the Conservative Party.

“Sadly, this shocking and abhorrent incident once again highlights the dangers that public servants can face, all of whom should be able to conduct such duties helping those they represent in safety.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends. May he rest in peace.”
