PUPILS at Crickhowell High School hit all the right notes in a young musicians’ competition.
Ruth and Barry Friend, professional musicians from the Wales National Opera, were the judges for the annual Rotary Young Musician competition in which 21 pupils took part.
Gabriel Kennedy, who performed two pieces by Chopin, won the instrumental competition which was entered by 18 pupils.
Oriel Gray won the vocalist section and Harry Barnes was highly commended.
The standard was so high that Michael Lindoewood on piano, Lloyd Jeremiah on piano, Josh Eyre on cello, Rebecca Cronin on violin, Rose Graham on harp and Donetta Cook on violin, were awarded highly commended status.
“Given the young age of many of the performers, the standard they have reached is astonishing,” said judge Ruth.
“What is particularly pleasing is the willingness of the younger pupils at the early stages of their musical journey, to perform in public.
“This skill is vital for musicians to develop into performers and great credit must go to Vicky Callow, their music teacher, for encouraging them along that journey.”
The winners of each section now move on to the area competition to be held in February.
