YOUNGSTERS at a Brecon primary school organised its first ever bonfire night to support a fundraising appeal.
The six and seven-year-olds in year two at Llanfaes County Primary School took on the organisation of the event – from inviting the fire brigade to ensure it went ahead safely to running stalls.
Class teacher Emma Thompson said the bonfire night, that was held on Wednesday, November 8, had raised more than £30 for the school’s appeal to fund new computer equipment from the 50p entrance fee alone.
She said: “The children were involved in planning and organising the event which has helped develop literacy and numeracy skills.
“We had to look at safety measures and costs and also wrote letters to parents and advertised it.”
Pupil Ava Woodbridge, aged 6, said she’d been running a bobbing apples store at the event – while her father was also involved with his colleagues from the Mid and West Wales Fire Service station in Brecon. Ava said: “Dad is a fireman and he’s helping the firemen to put the fire out.”
Classmate Sam Jones said: “It’s been very good and it’s gone very well. I’ve really enjoyed it.”
