PUPILS equipped with gardening gloves and gardening tools at Penmaes School have helped plant hundreds of purple crocus bulbs in their school grounds.
The bulbs were donated to the school by Brecon Rotary club as part of the Purple 4 Polio campaign.
Polio is a paralysing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. The disease is incurable but completely preventable using modern vaccines and purple is the colour of the dye that is put on each child’s little finger to show that they have been immunised. To help raise money for the immunisations, the Rotary movement has adopted the purple crocus in a bid to rule the world of polio.
The bulbs were planted by the pupils during lessons in gardening at the Brecon school with help from Rotarians Anne Ingham, Roger Reese and Mike Mellors.
The youngsters particularly enjoyed digging the holes alongside paths and around a tree for the blubs. The aim is for there to be a great show of purple in the school grounds when they bloom in the spring.
