Residents who are campaigning for safety improvements on a main road near where they live have released a video of bikers speeding at a spot where a fatal accident occurred in May.

The stretch of the A4215 between Libanus and Sennybridge, near Defynnog, is a hotspot for motorbikes and boy racers. Heavy goods vehicles are also known to emerge from an unclassified road which forms the crossroads at Cwmbrynich.

When vehicles take the shortcut – that leads past the Brecon Beacons National Park Visitor Centre – they pull out on to the A4215 at a point where a small hill forms a blind summit.

In May 34-year-old Lee Church from Neath was airlifted to Morriston Hospital in Swansea after a collision with a car driven by a local resident. The motorcyclist, who was riding an orange KTM motorbike, died from his injuries three weeks later.

The local woman managed to escape from her Audi A3 but nearby residents are still concerned that such a dangerous stretch of road can be allowed to exist.

Local campaigner Anita Denny called a site meeting near the crossroads in July where residents expressed their concerns about the junction and stretch of road to local politicians.

She said where she lives she can hear motorbikes racing from as far away as Sennybridge.

Speaking about the footage, she said: "You can hear them before they even get here.

"I had gone outside to feed my chickens, and I could hear them (the motorbikes) coming up from Sennybridge so I went inside to get my phone from the bedroom so I could film them in front of my house.

"For me to have the time to go inside and upstairs and come back with my phone, they must have been coming from further away.

"I think it must be worse for my neighbours than me, but there are times where you hear the bike and you can’t even really see it they’re going so fast.

"I just wish I could have caught their number plates as they were going past."

Ms Denny said one of her neighbours had asked her: "Is this some kind of race at this time of night?"

The group say they are still awaiting a response from Powys council about possible safety improvements following their site meeting.

The group is led by Maescar community councillors Sharon Pritchard and Andy Lewis.

Powys County Councillor Edwin Roderick and the Brecon and Radnorshire MP Chris Davies, who has been supportive of the group, attended the meeting along with PC Jeff Cahalane from Dyfed-Powys Police.

Residents have also met with AM Kirsty Williams who has also voiced her support for making the road safer.

Ms Denny said: "When you’re coming out from the mountain centre onto the A4215, where you pull out on to the brow of the really steep hill, you can’t see anything coming. You can pull out and something will hit into your side whether they’re doing 50 miles per hour, 60mph or more."

She said: "Our local councillor came back that way recently with other cars behind him and an Army lorry was coming towards them from the junction and there was just nowhere for them to.

"The road is just not safe – it was fine years ago when they built it, but now it’s just too narrow. It’s need to be made safer. Enough is enough."

Ms Denny also said she felt that road signs were not adequate to stop larger vehicles taking the shortcut and nothing had been done to stop people speeding in the area.
