Hay Festival has named The Road Home by Rose Tremain as its Book of the Month for November, in its continuing campaign to celebrate and ignite conversation around current and backlist books that have contemporary resonance.
First published in 2007, just three years after Poland and nine other countries joined the EU, The Road Home offers a view of the UK through a migrant’s eyes: inequality looms large as the stresses of chasing status and success in a new country settle on protagonist Lev’s shoulders.
Voted as audiences’ favourite book of the past 30 years at Hay Festival in 2017, The Road Home will be discussed by Rose Tremain at Hay Festival Winter Weekend in a live Book of the Month celebration on Saturday, November 24.
Peter Florence, director of Hay Festival, said: “Rose Tremain is one of the very finest British novelists. Revisiting The Road Home in 2018, with migration and the EU at the centre of political debate, it offers a human perspective often missing from the conversation.”
Run in partnership with Vanity Fair, Hay Festival’s Book of the Month is selected by the festival team in Hay-on-Wye, based on public recommendations, and aims to revisit and re-celebrate great works of fiction, non-fiction and poetry that reach through time to touch the present.
Titles are sold in the UK through the festival’s online shop, as well as being available in all good libraries and bookshops, with a digital festival of promotion online, including curated streams on the festival’s new Hay Player archive.
