Primary school pupils put speeding drivers on the spot during a road safety event – including one man caught going 52 miles per hour in a 30mph zone.

Pupils from Ysgol Bro Tawe and Ysgol Dyffryn y Glowyr yn Ystradgynlais were given a list of questions to put to people caught speeding near the two schools that were designed to draw an emotional response.

The children, along with police from Ystradgynlais, and Go Safe officers, stopped 18 vehicles going over the speed limit along Wind Road and Bethel Road.

Drivers were given the option of taking a fixed penalty notice or speaking with children from the schools, who had compiled a list of questions.

One man was caught travelling at 52mph in a 30mph zone and chose to speak with pupils, who explained the impact speeding can have.

PCSO Sarah Nash, of Dyfed-Powys Police, said: “It was a great opportunity to work with local schools and external partners. Everyone involved enjoyed and thought it was a worthwhile operation.

“Some drivers initially thought that speaking to the children would be the easier option however, when the children spoke to them, some started to get emotional and found some of the questions difficult to answer.

“It was a really impactive way to get across the message.

“I would like to thank everyone involved in making the day a success.”

Several organisations worked in partnership to deliver the day – Ystradgynlais PCSOs Sarah Nash and Maz Rahimi, Go Safe PCs John Whiles and Roger Jones, dog section PC Chris Phillips, Powys Council road safety officer Sara Lloyd, and councillors Sue McNicholas and Sandra Davies.
