STAFF at a Brecon opticians have been inspired to raise more than £600 for a cancer charity as the mother of the store’s director is battling the disease.
Donna Like runs Specsavers opticians in High Street, Brecon, and her mum Ruth was diagnosed with lung cancer in November 2017.
Staff at the store were inspired by Ruth’s fight to raise awareness about lung health by completing personal sponsored pledges in aid of Stepping Stones, the lung cancer campaign at the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff.
Seven members of staff completed the 300,000 steps they pledged and also did an additional 15 hours of yoga and held a bake sale in-store.
Hannah Shepherd, dispensing optician, said: ‘The team always puts so much effort into fundraisers, but because this was so close to home, everyone was even keener to pledge their support and raise money.
“The Stepping Stones Appeal not only raises money that funds vital research into treatments, but it is also important to raise awareness of general lung health. Lung cancer is the most common form of cancer in Wales but is one of the least supported.
“There are only two organisations in Wales dedicated to fighting lung cancer, Velindre and Roy Castle. We’re committed to do everything we can to change that.”
