EVERY family has its treasures. Be they jewellery, books or furniture – some are inherited, bought, or even discovered hidden in the depths of the attic.

Imagine the thrill of discovering how much your family heirlooms are worth. With a potential profit on the cards, would you be tempted to trade in that treasure to invest in a brand new treasure?

This will be the all-important question asked in a new S4C series, Trysorau’r Teulu (The Family Treasures) broadcast on Thursday nights, starting tonight (September 13).

Two experts, including a school teacher from Brecon, will be visiting families across Wales to discover just how much their treasures are worth.

In the first episode, can a comic collector be tempted to part with a rare first edition from his Eagle collection? While two sisters from Cardiff are itching to know if any photos have survived on a film taken from their 1940s camera bought from a charity shop for 50p.

John Rees, from Brecon, and Yvonne Holder are the experts who hold the answers. As a vintage expert, John loves to revamp old items to breathe new life in to forgotten treasures. In this series, he’ll be helping others to turn their trash into treasure.

Antique expert Yvonne Holder was charmed by antiques during her childhood, and she now owns a shop in Ceredigion with her husband, Jonathon.

“When I was a little girl, I received a Miller’s Antiques Guide as a Christmas gift,” explains Yvonne about the unusual gift which sparked her life-long interest. “I’ve collected each edition every year since then!”

The families will wait with baited breath as Yvonne draws on her expertise to set a price on the family treasures. Because of her keen interest, Yvonne will also uncover the history of the items discovered, dusting off all their ancient secrets.

Bangor will be John and Yvonne’s first stop, to meet author Bruce Griffiths and wife Ann Corkett. The two are keen collectors, and Bruce has kept hold of tens of copies of the 1950s comic, Eagle, since his childhood.

Among the collection is the most valuable of all – the first ever issue. With vintage comics selling for unbelievable prices, will Bruce be tempted to sell this rare copy of the iconic comic?

Then, two sisters from Cardiff invite John and Yvonne to rummage through their charity shop treasures. Emma, Natasha’s older sister, is keen for John to value her incredible collection of vintage cameras.

Emma has bought a 1940s Ful-Vue camera with a film already loaded inside. She is to discover a window in to the past as the film is sent off for developing, whilst keeping her fingers crossed that the camera remains in working order. Has Emma made a profit on her unique 50p charity shop find?

John and Yvonne are hoping to be bearers of good news revealing to both families how much their treasures are worth. They’ll then be asking the all-important question: Keep it, or to sell it?

Trysorau’r Teulu, a Nimble Dragon production, is on S4C on Thursdays at 8pm.
