VILLAGE pub the Black Cock Inn had its Facebook account suspended - after its name was ruled offensive.

Manager Lee Garrett was stunned to find he couldn’t log into the account he’d created to keep regulars up to date with news from the Llanfihangel Talyllyn tavern.

"I went to log in and it said ’account suspended’. I went through the process of requesting a reason why it had been suspended and it said ’racist and or offensive language’," said Lee who runs the pub with wife Natsuko and his parents Denise and Keith.

The bemused barman said the pub has had the name since at least 1840 and its moniker is a popular one for pubs across the country.

"There are quite a lot of pubs called the Cock or Black Cock across the country," said Lee.

"It’s a cockerel, a black cockerel. There’s nothing racist or offensive it’s literally just a black cockerel.

"I did put in an appeal against the decision but the response said they very rarely reconsider the decisions. I haven’t heard anything from them since."

The family has run the pub, in the village near Brecon, for the past 12 years, but the only complaint they have received about the name was in July this year.

"We had a phone call from a woman said she thought the name was offensive. She said she didn’t want her kids seeing the name of the pub when she drives past.

"My mother had a phone conversation with her, she said she was disgusted and embarrassed and had told her kids to conceal their eyes.

"She is the only person we’ve ever come across to have an issue with the name."
