A TEENAGER from Breconshire has been selected by the RYA to compete for Great Britain in the Volvo ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in Korea. On the strength of his performance in the 2005 five-day RYA Youth Championships and Trials off Largs Sailing Club in Scotland earlier this month, Tom Mallindine from Llangammarch Wells will now represent GB in the 420 class with partner James Clark. At the RYA Youth Champs, more than 300 young sailors pitted their wits against each other to win a place in the Youth World Team and there was a tremendous battle all week in the 420 class - both for the boys and girls slots in the GB squad. Winning half of the races in the series Tom and James from Corus Sailing Club ended the week on half the number of points of nearest rivals Richard Mason and Dan Schieber from Royal Lymington Yacht Club, to not only win the national title but also their places in the team for Korea. Malindine summed up his thoughts, "It was great to win the event. We believed we could and just concentrated on sailing well all week. We were hoping for some light winds to come but when they didn't we just concentrated on our boat and waited for other people to make the mistakes. I can't wait to get into training for the Youth Worlds and our aim is definitely a top three result." The event, which will take place in Korea, is dubbed the Youth Olympics and has previously identified talented sailors such as double Olympic gold medallists Ben Ainslie and Shirley Robertson. RYA Youth Sailing Manager Simon Wergan summed up the event by saying. "I am delighted that, given the forecast, we managed to get racing in every single day. "The event ran smoothly and efficiently and everyone, from the race office and committee to the volunteers, Largs Sailing Club and sailors, worked really well together with a common goal of achieving a top class event and I thank everyone involved in the championship. "I am convinced that we have selected a very strong team for Korea and I look forward to developing their plans and achieving their goals over the next three months."
