POLLS have closed and counting will soon begin in Britain’s first winter general election in nearly 100 years.
The broadcasters exit polls are predicting the Conservatives will win a majority of 86 taking 368 seats the party’s biggest victory since Margaret Thatcher in 1987.
Labour are predicted to be heading for their worst result with only 191 seats.
Conservative leader Boris Johnson had brought his general election campaign to the Royal Welsh Winter Fair at the Royal Welsh Showground, near Builth Wells, three weeks ago.
Tonight two seats the Conservatives are banking on for a majority will be announced at the same venue
Ballot boxes from across Brecon and Radnorshire are currently being transported to the Powys counting centre at the the showground in Llanelwedd where votes cast in Montgomeryshire will also be counted.
The Liberal Democrats are defending a 1,425 majority in Brecon and Radnorshire after Jane Dodds took the seat, that had been in Tory hands since 2015, at a by-election just four months ago.
That memorable August result was also announced at the showground’s foodhall.
In Montgomeryshire the Conservatives are defending the seat they have held since 2010 and which was was once the bastion of Welsh liberalism.
