A tortoise rescued from a fire has now returned to his home at a Knighton pub.

The tortoise was carried out from the Horse & Jockey Inn in Knighton when a fire broke out in the roof on Tuesday, causing lunchtime drinkers to flee the Station Road pub.

The pub, named Mid Wales Inn of the Year in 2016, re-opened on Tuesday evening and is trading as normal.

But owner Gary Salt said the accommodation used by manager Craig Small was smoke damaged. Manager Mr Small is currently in Thailand and has been informed of the fire and of his pet's lucky escape.

"The upstairs accommodation is all smoke damaged," said Mr Salt: "but we will have it all done and decorated by the time Craig comes back.

"We got the turtle straight over to the vets and had him checked and he’s all good."

The fire had little impact on the pub, said Mr Salt who added he was proud the pub had been recognised at November’s Welsh Hospitality Awards.

"We lost an afternoon and lunchtime’s trade.

"Out of hundreds of pubs we got down to the last six and had to go to Cardiff to get the award. We’re all pretty chuffed about it. It’s a recognition of the service the staff provide and the excellence of our food."

The Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it received a call that there was a chimney fire at the pub at 11.45 on Tuesday and crews from Knighton and Presteigne attended. An engine from Clun station in Shropshire also attended at the scene.

The tortoise was checked by a vet at the nearby Ashburn Veterinary Centre. Wylcwm Street was closed during the incident.
